It's not that easy to find, and quite easy to walk past without noticing. But behind the unassuming frontage is a real gem. It is the nearest thing to a Dickensian alehouse that I have seen outside a museum.

You walk through the door into a small front room with white and blue picture tiling, lit partly by candles. Beyond the partition is the small, often crowded bar, leading to further seating areas (tables and benches in nooks and crannies at different levels).

The house beers come from St Peter's brewery in rural Suffolk. Organic best bitter, Golden Ale and porter were available on draught when I was there, along with the fruit beer of the day, which happened to be elderberry. If that's not sufficient choice, there is the full range of bottled beers too.

I almost hesitate to recommend this pub, in case I can't get in the next time I try.
