Quite simply the best bar in London.

Fabulous drinks, courteous, intelligent staff, ambient music (mainly blues), cool "speak-easy" decor and the comfiest chairs (in the Red Room, at least) of any bar I've ever visited.

But.

It's a bar for grown-ups. That's a selling point to me but if you go to bars to get drunk and shrieking, pick up members of the opposite (or same) sex or regale the room with not-so-sotto-voce conversations about that deal you've done or how you once snogged the sister of Madonna's manicurist then it's not for you.

Thank God.

This is a great place. It is the ideal venue to take out a friend or a partner for a relaxed and ambient evening with wartime music, excellent service and (hopefully) good conversation. This bar is so chilled out that when you leave it and wander around the rest of Soho you feel as if you are floating on a cloud of relaxation and happiness. It obliterates the usual aggression of the West End- you smile at everything instead of sneering at it. Going to this place is like enjoying a great evening in your own house before stepping right out into the heart of the entertainment district. It really is a haven in the middle of the jungle that is the West End.

This doesn't compare to the Milk & Honey in NYC although they share some qualities such as the hidden door. The one in London is trying too hard to be undercover and that's all it has going for it. The whole basis of the one in NY is that it's hidden, tiny and the cocktails chosen for you are made out of ingredients that are fresh and hard to find. For example, you ask for a drink with vodka that is slightly sweet and they may bring you a rosewater martini that will blow your mind or something of equal interest. It's a gamble and that's half the fun. The cocktails at the Milk & Honey in London were very average and it's really a shame.

I recently visited Milk and Honey with a group of work colleagues and was at first very pleasantly surprised. The decor really added to the atmosphere and threw me back to the 1950s where i was treated to a kind of chivalry that doesnt exist anymore. The bartenders whiped up fab cocktails and were waiting in the wings to light your cigarettes as soon as you lifted it to your lips.We stayed into the early hours having a very civillised time until things got a little tense..

One member of our group was thrown out into the street for talking a little too loudly and the rest of us who had acted like sensible grown up individuals were surrounded by the previously friendly serving staff watching us as if world war 3 was about to break. The Manager( who looked as if she was sucking a sherbert lemon all night )threatened our groups members pass to be axed and quite frankly soured the whole night. We then left...unhappy.

So thank-you Milk and Honey for taking all our hard earned cash on a lot bottles of champayne and then making us feel very guilty for keeping you up so late!

p.s if you feel like omiting a loud noise(like a sneeze for example)do it outside for fear of upsetting the management!
