I think the problem is not the amount of staff but the way in which they conduct themselves, i was in the other night and there were three of them behind the bar. The girls chatted, and the lad was brilliant. Just goes to show if you work hard people appreciate it, thanks to that lad. Can't remember his name but he had a black shirt thing on. Food was ok, but there is a huge difference in value between the BBQ menu and the normal one.

Great location, great pub garden, appalling service, moody staff who shouldn't work behind a bar or in any kind of customer service role. I ordered a burger and it was disgusting...like an economy burger which wasn't cooked in the middle. The "chef" delivered the burger and announced how tired he was and plonked the excuse for a burger down. Such a waste of a lovely pub...oh and the 20+ minute wait for a drink.

the Canonbury should be a top top pub...its has everything in place to achieve this..except quality of management and staff...not their fault entirely after all it is a managed house so the area manager should take some stick...not enough staff and those that worked altho friendly just arnt that good at what they do..and appear to be on a go slow..waitng 20 minutes for service isnt acceptable if they cant handle the volume of customers then they need to hire more staff...this wasnt always the case last summer 2004 and before then 2003 were good...always busy but the staff were always busy too...bring back billy ,neil ad gavin...at least tables were cleaned and you got served quickly enough...now unless you buy 3 or 4 pints at a time you may as well bring your own....

I have visited the Canonbury on several occasions, the last one was on Quiz night recentley. Had a great night and staff were very friendly. The food was good and great value. I suggest that Mr Ferincz and Mr. Hill get in the real world. This is supposed to be a trendy pub not a cafe. If they want clinical robotic staff they should visit McDonalds, and if they want prim and proper go to a west end hotel or China White.I am guessing the staff are mostly students, trying to earn a living on a meagre wage as they put themselves through Uni. As I have worked in a pub myself I know how difficult it is when you are busy. It is nice to have appreciative understanding customers who maybe offer to buy the bar staff a drink occasionally, instead of berating them. Get a life and take a chill pill life is too short.

Really Very Nice Pub as everyone says, particularly alarmed at the startling accuracy of Mr Ferincz's review about bar staff though.
Seemed too busy faffing around pulling their low cut jeans up than to be bothered with such minor trivialites as serving customers, perhaps the owners should by them some belts !!!

I agree with Mr Ferincz. It was a beautiful summer evening, the company was wonderful, the food was very good quality, and whilst the lad who served me seemed to know what he was doing (although his t-shirt was somewhat tasteless), too many others were surly and slow. God knows what they were doing - it certainly wasn't wiping the bar down. By about 9.30 the bar was swimming in drink, and it was
impossible to collect your order without emerging from the scrum covered in slops. And waiting upwards of twenty minutes to be served isnt much fun either. Some serious customer care training required

Nice pub, nice area, crap trendy barstaff.
Clueless bohos behind the bar ensure you start sobering up before you get served.
I recommend you sneak beers in and enjoy the popular beergarden that way, rather than have your night spoiled by waiting at the bar.

Went here on a lovely sunny day. It has to be the finest pub in London when the sun is out (not vewry often in this country). The beer garden is absolutely massive, its more like a park. Only downside are the kids running about but apparently they are banned after 7.

The Canonbury Tavern is a real find. Tucked away in a beautiful part of London it serves good old fashioned food including proper sunday roasts with all the trimmings and a good selection of veggy dishes such as leek sausages and mash.
However, it really comes into its own in summer as it has North London's largest beer garden - it must hold about 300 people. Plus, they hold regular BBQs at the weekend but not your usual burnt burger in a soagy bun affair, oh no they have steak sarnis; BBQ fish kebabs and again lovey vegetarian sauages - making it a must for warm summers evenings.
